Full developmental edit

If you need feedback and guidance on your plot, characters, and story structure, then a full developmental edit can help.

I will provide you with a professional critique of your entire manuscript that includes in-line edits (using ‘track changes’ and the comments feature of MS Word) and a detailed revision letter. The revision letter will provide you with suggestions for strengthening your story and advice on how you might move forward with your project. I will not rewrite the work, but I will make specific suggestions as to how you can strengthen all aspects of the story to reflect what you’re trying to say in the most compelling way.

To learn more about my approach to developmental editing, see my page: About developmental editing.

Please note that this is not a proofreading or copyediting service.

As every manuscript has different needs, I price on a per-project basis. As a very rough estimate, the fee for a 90,000 word novel could fall anywhere between £1,300 and £2,000.

Critique/Reader’s report

If you aren’t ready for a full developmental edit but need guidance for your revision, then you may benefit from a critique.

I will review your full manuscript and provide you with a detailed revision letter. The revision letter will focus on overall developmental concerns and provide advice on how to strengthen any weak areas of your manuscript.

Please note that this service does not include in-text comments/line edits.

The fee for this service varies depending on the level of feedback needed. As a rough estimate, the fee for a 90,000 word manuscript could fall anywhere between £500 and £700.

Outline review

If you’re a writer who likes to plan your stories in detail, and need advice about plot and structure, then an outline review can help ensure you have a strong foundation for your draft.

I will provide you with an evaluation of your story’s outline, including comments on the outline itself and a 3-5 page revision letter. Advice will be provided on how you might strengthen the structure, plot, pacing and any character development issues that are cropping up at this stage of the writing.

Should you later decide to book a full developmental edit then the cost of this service can be deducted from the final cost of editing.

The fee for this service is dependent on the length and complexity of your outline. A fairly straightforward outline of 5,000 words would cost approximately £150.

Opening chapter review: Setting up your story

If you’re still drafting your story or are not yet ready for editing, but need advice about how to move forward, then an opening chapter review can help you to do that.

I will review your opening 3-5 chapters and your outline or synopsis, if you have one. I will then provide you with a 3-5 page revision letter giving you advice on set-up, story direction, character introductions and general story structure.

Please note that this option does not include in-text comments/line edits.

The fee for this service varies depending on word count and outline complexity (if you have an outline). As a general guide, the fee for reviewing approximately 12,000 words and a two-page synopsis would be around £200.

Should you later decide to book a critique or full developmental edit then the cost of this service can be deducted from the final cost of editing.

Proofreading

If you’ve already had your book professionally edited (including copyedited) but need a final quality check before publishing, then proofreading can help you achieve that.

I will read through the entire book, as a reader would, checking for any errors that may have slipped through to this final, pre-publication stage. These may include things like:

  • formatting errors
  • inconsistency of chapter titles
  • chapter headers that may have ended up in the wrong places
  • missing pages (or blank pages that have accidentally inserted themselves into the body of the text)
  • visual elements/graphics that aren’t in the correct location/s or haven’t transferred over well
  • typos that may have snuck through
  • inconsistent spellings/styles

If your book will be published as an e-book and has already been transferred to an epub or mobi file, I will check the book’s display on my e-reader (Kindle). I will also check any links that you provide, such as links to your Amazon Author page or your website, as well as links within the book (such as links to the different chapters from your Table of Contents).

I’m happy working in MS Word, PDF, epub, or mobi.

The fee for proofreading depends on the level of amendment required. As a general guide, a proofread of a 90,000 word manuscript would cost between £450 and £1,000.
